About
Brandy Perry
Photographer · Director · Based in Lisbon, working everywhere
I make pictures that refuse to explain themselves quickly. My work sits between editorial portraiture and a fairly stubborn conceptual practice — the same lighting discipline applied to a fashion cover and to a dying CRT monitor.
I started in photojournalism, which taught me to work fast and to distrust anything that looks too resolved. A decade of commercial work taught me the opposite discipline: build the set, control every variable, and earn the accident. The tension between those two habits is most of what my work is about.
Studio practice is deliberately small. I shoot roughly nine commissions a year, build most of my own rigs, and do all my own printing. Clients get fewer frames than they expect and the right one more often than they expect.
Artistic statement
“A photograph is a decision about what to exclude. Everything else — the gear, the lighting, the retouch — is administration.”

The studio takes roughly nine commissions a year, which means dates go early. Tell me what you are making and I will tell you honestly whether I am the right person for it.
